SUP Surfing The Colorado River

Check out Dan Gavere and other river surfers catching some standing waves on the Colorado River this past spring. This looks like serious fun!

Land Paddling

Land paddling when I can't make it to the river or to the coast for a paddle or surf. Land paddling is great for cross-training and also good practice for paddle transfers from side to side. Video

Wildlife At The Wekiva

Back in April I went for a quick evening paddle in the Wekiva dropping in at Katie's Landing. From my front door to the drop in it's a little over 5 miles but seems like a different world when you get there. Sometimes there's a pair of wild turkeys running around the parking lot or near the water's edge. That day I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a deer, a sandhill crane with a baby chick and a great blue heron.

The paddle was nice too.

First Wave

Remember when you caught your first wave? I don't mean when you bounced on your belly in the whitewater and stood up for a second before falling. I mean the first time you caught a wave cleanly where you were in the perfect spot so that you could drop in down the face of the wave, make a bottom turn and go down the line with a few carving turns and cut backs until the wave fizzled out. If you don't remember your first wave, well, that's too bad. I do, and I can still remember the spot, the weather and surf conditions, who I was surfing with and I can play it back like a movie in my mind whenever I want. I had another one of those first wave experiences a few months ago when I caught my first SUP wave. The conditions were not epic: waist high and mushy but perfect all the same. I never forget first waves.

Lake Ivanhoe In April

Sam's first time on the board. She was a little shaky at first but caught on quickly. She's a seasoned paddler now.
